Women's soccer dominates NEO 7-1

The Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks scored seven goals despite playing a team that put nine players behind the ball at all times during the game in a 7-1 whitewash of NEO on Sunday.

NOC improved to 4-1-1 on the season.  They travel to #3 Seminole on Wednesday.

It was obvious from the start that NEO's game plan was to pack players in the back and try to keep the game close.  It was effective for the most part in the first half as the Norse held the Mavericks to three goals, and even picked up a goal of their own on a long shot that just cleared the outstretched hand of Northern goalkeeper Vanessa MarklChloe Wilkins started the Mavs scoring early in the game.   Jazmine Furra had the assist.  Luana San Miguel scored the Mavericks second goal nine minutes later with Chloe Wilkins picking up the assist.  Moments later NEO scored their lone goal of the game on a long shot after a Maverick turnover at midfield.  Late in the first half San Miguel would add to the Northern lead with a tap in goal off of Heidi Wiedmeier's cross into the box.

The Mavericks started the second half strong with a goal just three minutes after the break.  Jazmine Furra curled a corner kick into the net over the goalkeeper's head.  A few minutes later Heidi Wiedmeier rebounded Josie Jarvis' shot off the left post and ripped a shot past the Norse goalkeeper.  Furra and Wiedmeier would team up for the Mavs next goal as Wiedmeier would cross the ball to Furra for the Mavs sixth goal.  Maria Perez would finish the scoring with a long shot that beat the goalkeeper.  Mia Yerian had the assist.

Northern outshot NEO 41-1 forcing the Norse goalkeeper to make an amazing twenty-five saves on the day.

"Credit the girls for their patience and passing ability," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "Our first group moved it well.  The second group had a few bad passes, but it was uncharacteristic of the player that was responsible for most of them so I'm not worried.  They gave us a lot of space on the outside and our outside backs; Heidi Wiedmeier, Hailey Stage, Cayla Hoch, and Karolina Arriaga had a lot of fun getting forward.  Mia Yerian has had such an impact for us this year.  I'm so happy for her.  Our girls can really move the ball.  They are fun to watch."
