Women celebrate goal over Crowder

After opening the season with three road games the Mavericks were anxious to put on a show in the home opener which the Maverick women did in an 8-0 rout over Crowder.

It didn't take the ladies long to get going.  Luana San Miguel took a pass from Jazmine Furra and shot over the goalkeeper's head for the opening goal just forty-six seconds into the game.  Heidi Wiedmeier scored the Mavs second goal nine minutes later with Abbi Vargas picking up the assist.  Jazmine Furra would score three minutes later off a cross from Chloe Wilkins.  Wilkins would pick up another assist late in the first half on San Miguel's second goal of the game, and then score one of her own minutes later off an assist by Sam Mendez to make the score 5-0 at the half.

The second half started much the way the first half did with an early goal by the Mavericks.  Jazmine Furra collected her second goal of the game just a minute after the break.  Furra intercepted a pass at the top of the box and shot over the goalkeeper's head for the Mavs sixth goal of the game.  Furra would pick up the assist on the next goal, a long shot by Cayla Hoch.  Wilkins would end the scoring on the day with a free kick goal with six minutes left in the game.  Vanessa Markl and Larissa Haagsma combined in goal for the shutout.  Although neither received any work as Crowder could only come up with one shot on the day, and it was not on goal.  The Northern back line, which featured Cierra Gann, Lexi Albright, Hailey Stage, Josie Jarvis, Cayla Hoch, Heidi Wiedmeier, Jayden Dobbs, and Celeste Maldonado dominated any attacks the Roughriders could produce.

"I was proud of the girls for the way they played," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "We were able to possess the ball, which we normally do, but it didn't drop off when we substituted.  Cierra and Lexi were rocks in the back.  They shut down the few chances Crowder had, and then Jayden had a chance to play a lot and played very well.  There is still a lot that we can improve on.  We can't be satisfied with where we are at."

NOC is now 2-1-1 on the season.  They host Allen County on Wednesday.
