Women's soccer wins easily at Murray State 5-2

TISHOMINGO, Oklahoma -- A frustrated Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks team took the field at Murray State Sunday, and the Aggies were the victim of a 5-2 drubbing.

Ironically the early portion of the game served to create more frustration for Northern, according to coach Michael DuRoy. DuRoy said the Mavs dominated the game from the start creating chance after chance to score, but each shot was off target keeping Murray State in the game.

Northern would finally break through on a corner kick.  Sam Mendez headed in Jazmine Furra's corner kick to give the Mavs the lead thirteen minutes into the game.  Murray State would tie the game nine minutes later with a counter attack goal.  It didn't take the Mavericks long to wrestle the lead back though as Luana San Miguel ran behind the Aggies back line and crossed the ball to Mia Yerian who shot first time just under the bar for the goal of the year so far.

Josie Jarvis got the Mavs off to a fast start in the second half with two early goals.  The first coming just two minutes after the break off of an assist from Jazmine Furra.  The second coming a few minutes later off an assist from Chloe Wilkins.  Wilkins would end the scoring for the Mavericks two minutes later with Jazmine Furra picking up her third assist of the game.  Northern substituted a number of reserves after the fifth goal and the Aggies capitalized immediately with a goal one minute after Wilkins goal.  The rest of the game would see the Mavericks mostly defending, but Northern did not concede another goal.

"Every win is a good win, but this one could have been much better," DuRoy said.  "We should have scored nine goals today.  We missed so many chances early.  We also continue to get beaten on the counter.  We need to organize our midfield so we aren't so open to counters, and we need to play the midfielders that are not only going to keep possession of the ball, but also win balls in the midfield, and defend hard.  Our heading of the ball was atrocious, or I should say lack of heading the ball.  On a positive though Josie Jarvis has really saved us so far this year.  She is our leading scorer with three goals."

The Mavs next game will be Wednesday at Eastern Oklahoma State College.
