Seminole shuts out Mavs 1-0

SEMINOLE, Oklahoma -- The Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks traveled to #3 Seminole on a hot Wednesday and were shut out 1-0 by the Trojans.

Temperatures were in the mid 90's and the turf field made it feel much warmer.  The conditions didn't deter either team from playing hard as both teams battled for ninety minutes.  The majority of the game was played in the midfield with each team getting into the other's half.  Seminole did create the better chances in the first half.  The Trojans had a great chance with a one on one against Maverick goalkeeper Vanessa Markl, but Markl was able to make the save.  The lone goal of the game would come on a cross/shot twenty-five minutes into the game.  A Trojan player had the ball wide on the right side near the sideline when she launched a very well struck ball into the box that slammed into the upper corner of the goal.

Northern didn't register a shot on goal until late in the game when Sam Mendez shot from just outside the box.  The Seminole goalkeeper was able to make the save to keep the Mavs scoreless.  Northern did threaten with several corner kicks late in the game, but were unable to break through.  The stats were fairly even for the game with Seminole outshooting the Mavericks 7-2, with four shots on goal to one.  Northern did create one more corner kick than the Trojans.

"It was a tough game," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "Seminole is good and they play extremely hard.  Their backline controlled our forwards.  That was the biggest difference in the game.  They sped us up, and took away some of our possession, so credit goes to them.  They were the better team today.  I'm not sure if their goal was meant to be a shot or a cross, but it was a banger.  There was no saving that.  Overall it was a hard fought, really well played game by both sides.  It was physical, but both teams played with class.  There were a few huge collisions out there today.  The girls from both teams were laying it on the line for their teams out there."
