#19 Mavs lose heartbreaker to #6 Ranked Seminole 2-1

In a matchup of two top twenty teams Northern lost a hard fought game with Seminole 2-1 Sunday at NOC Tonkawa.

NOC dropped to 4-1 with the loss, Seminole improved to 4-0.

The game went back and forth for ninety minutes with a big error ending up being the difference.

The game started with both teams having possession.  Seminole had a few early chances, and the Mavs were able to easily play around the Trojans.  Seminole stuck first in the eleventh minute with a cross into the box, which the Mavs misplayed leading to an easy Seminole goal.  Moments later it looked like Seminole would go up by two goals when a cross into the box found a wide open Trojan in the box, but the header went harmlessly over the goal.  That would be the last good opportunity of the half for Seminole.  It looked like the Mavs were going to tie the game late in the half as Janet Moreno found space in the box and shot, but the Seminole goalkeeper made a nice save to keep the Mavs off the scoreboard.

Moreno had another opportunity to tie the game in the second half, but once again her shot was saved by the Seminole goalkeeper.  Seminole only had one shot on goal in the second half and that shot was easily handled by Mavs goalkeeper, Jordan Webster.  Later in the half a Seminole cross was misplayed by the Mavs goalkeeper into the net for an unfortunate goal.  Later in the game Janet Moreno was fouled in the box leading to a penalty kick for the Mavericks.  Milica Bulatovic scored from the spot to bring the Mavs within one.  Neither team could score in the remaining five minutes giving Seminole the 2-1 win.

"Hard fought game between two good teams," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "I'm happy with the way we played.  We had two big mistakes that really hurt us, but we will learn from them.  We played some good soccer today.  There is always an adjustment when you play Seminole.  The girls have to be ready for all the trash talk that is said from their bench.  Once they adjusted to it and started fighting back we were fine.  We can't wait to get back out on the field and compete again."
