Women's Soccer Defeats #7 in the Nation

Las night in an exciting game the Lady Mavs came back from a 2-1 score at half time to beat ranked #7 in the Nation Butler College for 2-3. This result ended Butler's undefeated streak at home since 2014.

Northern showed up to the field proposing the game and attacking from the first minute of the match. This caused some risk in the back line allowing Butler to get ahead in the scoreboard at only 6mins. However the Lady Mavs reaction was almost immidiate and 3 minutes later (9:00) Megan Mayfield crossed the ball perfectly and found Gifty Ayew Asare 's head to tie the game for the moment. This was Asare's 6th goal in 2 games. The midfield was a battlefield and no one could gain control of it. At the 21 minute mark a fast break cause Butler's second and last goal of the evening and so they went into half time with a 2-1 lead.

For the second half the Lady Mavs were in total control of the game, generating chance after chance and controlling most of the field. Aubrey Welker and Kariss Dunson were outstanding in the back line anticipating and cutting off any fast break that Butler's forwards intended. The domination and insistance from Northern was almost overlwhelming for Butler. Mayra Vega had a chance to tie up the game in a couple of ocassions but her shots went a little wide. Finally with 15 minutes remaining in the game the Lady Mavs could find the back of the net and tie the game momentarily with a great play between Asare and midfielder Rebekah Brantley were she cut trhough defenders and placed her shot away from the goalkeeper. With only 6 minutes to go Northern kept pressing on to get the winning goal and this came through a nice combination between Marybel Garcia that passed the ball to Rachel Brantley which crossed prefectly to find Megan Deshazo 's head and score the goal that ultimately would mean the win for Northeren.

Coach Castillo's impression of the game: "I thought the girls had an amazing display of heart and at moments great futbol. We struggled a little bit getting coordinated in the back in the first half but the girls adjuested and corrected it. At second half I can honestly say that the girls totally dominated the game in every inch of the field. We are trying to be a team that will go out and try to take the initiative and show that we want to win at any field we play, displaying an attractive and attacking futbol".

The starting 11: Jo McCray, Kariss Dunson, Aubrey Welker, Morgan Medina, Marybel Garcia, Denise Diaz, Rebekah Brantley, Rachel Brantley, Megan Mayfield, Megan Deshazo and Gifty Ayew Asare.
