PIEDMONT, Oklahoma -- The NOC Tonkawa Mavs advanced in the Region 2/South Central District Tournament Wednesday with a 3-1 win over Baton Rouge (LA) at Piedmont High School.
Wednesday's win was not without drama as in the seventh, the Bears cut a 3-0 NOC lead to 3-1 and had the bases loaded with one out.
Starter Jordan Johnson was brilliant over the first 6.1 innings with Makenzie Wilson coming in to snuff out the Bear rally.
The Bears scored one run with the bases loaded on a single but a second runner was thrown at home by Elyssa Kaniatobe on the relay from Jules Leach. Catcher Payton St. Andrews then caught a Bear baserunner in a rundown between second and third base and she was tagged out with Kaniatobe making the tag to end the game.
The Mavs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first as both Faith Williams and Jadison Ackerman scored on the same wild pitch.
NOC bumped the lead to 3-0 in the third as Kayla Stover scored on a sacrifice fly from Maggie Glasgow.
Johnson was in control in the circle working 6.1 innings allowing one run on six hits before Wilson entered in the seventh.
Kaniatobe and Macy Willing had two hits each for NOC.
The Mavs (24-29) advance to face top seed and #25 Seminole at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night. Seminole defeated NOC Enid 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.
