Men's soccer ties Rose State

Temperatures of over 100 degrees and 110 minutes of soccer couldn't separate Northern and Rose State on Wednesday as the Mavericks and Raiders played to a 2-2 tie.  Neither team could score for the first thirty minutes as both teams were organized defensively and limited most of the play to the midfield.  Northern broke through first with Ethan Bartee scoring his first goal as a Mav.  Kevin Ayala picked up the assist.  Rose State would even the score late in the first half sending the game into the break tied 1-1.

Both teams battled each other and the heat in a well played second half.  Rose State took the lead on a breakaway goal with just over ten minutes to play that seemed destined to be the game winner.  However Ryan Doig had several late chances for the Mavericks with one shot deflecting off the post and onto the foot of Maverick midfielder Lewis Albert.  Albert blasted the ball into the net to tie the game.

Rose State had the best chance in the overtime periods, but Aron Kanyai made a big save for the Mavs to keep the game tied.

"Credit both teams.  Playing one hundred and ten minutes in that heat is extremely hard to do," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "I thought our centerbacks David Garcia and Blayne Bryant played their best game of the year.  We gave ourselves a chance to win against a really good team by being organized and limiting our mistakes.  As we get more players healthy we should be able to wins some games down the stretch."
