17th Ranked Men's Soccer Blows Out Rich Mountain

The Mavs showed their potential with an easy 6-0 win over Rich Mountain on Sunday improving their record to 3-0.

Northern had several players make their return to the line up and in some cases their debut.  The difference was noticeable from the start.  Once again the Mavs got an early goal.  This time it was Jesus Aleman that would put Northern up early.  Just seven minutes into the game the Mavericks forced a back pass to the Bucks goalkeeper.  The goalkeeper picked up the ball resulting in an indirect free kick from just inside the top corner of the box.  The Mavericks took the free kick early before Rich Mountain was ready resulting in the easy goal.  Six minutes later Northern would strike again.  Marcovich Brown played a great corner kick into the box, and Kareem Williams powerfully headed the ball into the net.

The Mavs have had an early history of relaxing after taking the lead, but not on this day.  Damorney Hutchinson blasted a ball into the net to put the Mavericks up 3-0 just twenty-two minutes into the game.  The barrage didn't end there however as Josh Bell scored off of Kevin Ayala's corner kick minutes before half time to put the Mavs up 4-0.

The second half started much the same way as the first.  Aleman scored a goal just minutes after the break off an excellent pass from Marcovich Brown.  From that point on Northern, playing mostly reserve players, was content to keep possession against the tired Rich Mountain team.  Josh Bell did create a chance for the Mavs getting into the box before being fouled.  Assanie Brown stepped to the spot and beat the keeper for the final goal of the game.

"I've been hard on the boys this year, because I know their potential," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "We are tough to beat if we play our best.  We haven't even come close to doing that yet.  Today we did play better.  Our defense was much more organized.  Our midfield played better than they have to this point in the season, and forwards chased up front.  David Garcia was great today in the back.  He was starting in place of an injured player and really did a nice job.  Kareem Williams did what he always does, speaking in the back and coming forward on set plays.  Our reserve players were really good today too."

"We have to keep improving because every game gets tougher," DuRoy added.

Northern will be back at home on Thursday hosting Murray State College at 4 p.m.
