JD Ray hits 11 3-pointers in Maverick win over Western

ALTUS, Oklahoma -- JD Ray's 37 points led Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa past Western 85-53 Thursday night in Altus.

The NOC (25-3) men improved to 11-3 in conference play while Western (9-16) fell to 4-9 in conference.

Thursday was the JD Ray show as the freshman from Midwest City made 11 3-pointers on his way to 37 points.  Tyrel Morgan added 17 for the Mavs.

Morgan had 11 rebounds while Malik Crawford added 10.

NOC led 31-18 at half before blowing the game open in the second half.

"We didn't get off to the best start, it took us awhile to get going," said coach Donnie Jackson.  "Credit Western with switching zones on us.  Western was up 13-10 and I called timeout.  Avante (Lederer) then hit two 3-pointers to us get going."

"JD (Ray) played an unbelievable game," Jackson added.  "He hit 11 3-pointers and had a stretch in the second half where he hit four in a row.  That (11 3-pointers) tied the school record."

"We will take this road win, Jackson said.  "Western is always a tough place to play and coach Rolando does a good job of mixing and matching defenses."

The Mavs conclude their home schedule Monday against Eastern.

"We have sophomore night on Monday against Eastern, they are the most dangerous team in the league," he said.  "They have firepower that is capable of hitting 20 3-pointers in a game and have Dante Adams, one of the best players in the league.  We will need to handle their pressure and guard the arc.  We need to find a way to send the sophomores out the right way."
