King's 38 points leads Mavs past National Park

ENID, Oklahoma -- Sophomore Demaree King had 38 points to lead the Mavs (7-0) past National Park College 98-86 Thursday at the NOC Enid Jets Classic in downtown Enid.

King also was joined in double figures by Deaveon Bankston with 13, Tyrel Morgan with 13, and Adrian Boykin 11.

National Park led the Mavs 42-36 before the Mavs went on a 7-1 run to end the half at 43-43.

NOC then slowly pulled away in the second half building the lead to 83-64 before National Park rallied but could never get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"I have been worried about this game for a while," said Mavs coach Donnie Jackson.  "National Park just started a team two years ago and they aren't someone you know about but they are good.  I tried to tell the guys they had a good team and good players but I don't know that it sunk in until we started seeing how good they are.  Sometimes guys look ahead even when we tell them not to and I think that's what happened."

"Hopefully, that is a lesson learned that all teams have good players," Jackson added.  "No one can be overlooked and I knew they had enough talent to potentially beat us."

"Demaree (King) played one heckuva game, Jackson said.  "He single handedly kept us from getting blown out in the first half.  After the team settled down, we had more juice in the second half.  Deaveon (Bankston) played a lot better in the second half and Tyrel (Morgan) made some big buckets for us."

Rebounding is a concern for the Mavs going forward, according to Jackson.

"Defensive rebounding has to improve," he said.  "It has been our Achilles heel all year long.  We have to learn to compete on the defensive glass."

The Mavs tangle with #18 New Mexico at 3 p.m. today.

"We have a big time test today in New Mexico," he said.  "They are good at what we aren't right now, rebounding.  We will need to get better in a hurry of we want t a chance to be in the game.  They have three players that are the real deal and are capable of going for 20 points or more.  We will need to be locked in for 40 or more minutes, especially on the glass."
