Mavericks Shutout Bucks

(April 9, 2021) Tonkawa, Oklahoma – Coming off their first win of the season at NEO on Wednesday, the Bucks (1-2-0 and 1-1-0 in region play) squared off with NOC – Tonkawa (3-0-0 and 2-0-0 in region play) Friday afternoon in Northern Oklahoma. The Mavericks would shutout the Bucks, 3-0.

Last year's Region 2 Tournament MVP, Edward Garcia (De Queen, AR) got his first start in the goal for the Bucks. He would make a save before the 9-minute mark to end some Maverick runs. The Bucks were unable to maintain possession as the Mavs controlled the match. In the 26th minute, a 30-minute lightening was enforced due to weather in the area.

After the 30-minute delay, wind was going to be a factor. The match resumed, and the Mavs picked up where they left off. The Bucks made a counter in the 32nd minute but were unable to get off a shot. The Bucks got possession again and made a run in the 35th minute, but it was unsuccessful. The Mavericks did counter and get a shot off in the 37th minute, but Edward Garcia made the save. For the remainder of the half, both teams would trade possessions and goal kicks. The Bucks did get a corner kick opportunity, but it was unsuccessful. Match was tied at 0-0 at halftime.

Tonkawa controlled the start of the 2nd half and capitalized on a goal at the 50:39 mark to take the 1-0 lead. For the next 5 minutes, the Bucks attacked and got a free kick in the 55th minute, but it was unsuccessful. Tonkawa countered and got a couple corner kicks around the 60th minute. The Bucks defense prevailed.

In the 63rd minute, the Mavericks had the wind in their favor and got another corner kick. After several defensive saves, Edward Garcia was able to get a save to clear the ball. Both teams went back and forth until a foul on the Bucks. At the 72:11 mark, the Mavericks scored on a free kick to increase their lead, 2-0.

The Mavericks maintained possession and found the back of the net again at the 79:45 mark and maintained possession for the remainder of the game. The Bucks would get shutout, 3-0.

The Bucks play again on Sunday, April 11th, at Rose State College.
