Highland Women's Basketball Opens Season 2-0 With Pair of Wins at Allen Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 For the fourth straight year the Highland women's basketball team played at the Allen Classic early in the season or to tipoff the year and just like the previous three years the Scotties went 2-0 in action in Iola, Kansas to open the 2019-20 season.

Scotties cruised to the wins starting the season on Friday with a 120-58 win over Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa and then dispatched Calvary University 93-33 on Saturday.

Highland opened the season taking control early against Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa and led 25-12 after the first quarter and extended the lead over the course of the contest including finishing the game with a 31-9 fourth quarter to secure the 120-58 win. Scotties forced 27 turnovers scoring 37 points off those turnovers, while holding their opponent to 29.3% shooting in the contest and won the rebounding battle 55-33. Highland on offense shot 54.1% including 17-36 from three-point range.

Pacing the Scotties was sophomore, Tiana Gipson who dropped 37 points and hit 11 three-points in the contest to break a single game Highland record she tied last year for made three-pointers in a game. Riana Lawson made a strong debut for the Scotties tallying 22 points on 9-11 shooting and four other Scotties had double figures. Erin Randle notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while adding six assists, also. Jahnari Brydlong posted 11 points, Khaliah Hines had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Armani Turner posted 10 points.

Scotties jumped on top of Calvary University on Saturday early leading 18-3 after the first quarter and capped the game with a 26-5 fourth quarter to cruise to the 93-33 win. Highland forced 37 turnovers in the win and held their opponent to just 17.1% shooting, while the Scotties again shot of 50% going 41-72 from the floor for 56.9% from the field and had 29 steals.

Turner led the Scotties with 14 points and added six steals, while Destiny Cartwright notched 10 points and Gipson had nine points, five assists and five steals. Randle recorded another double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Lawson recorded 11 points.

Highland opens the season 2-0 with the wins and the Scotties will continue the season on Wednesday, November 6th at home when they host Concordia University JV at 6:00pm.
