Mavs shut out OKU in home opener

The Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks won their home opener Thursday with a 4-0 shutout of Oklahoma Wesleyan at Maverick Field.

NOC (1-2) scored early with a goal from Freshman Skylar Yocham with an assist from Maddie Cochran who played a ball through the defense to Yocham who touched the ball around the OKU Keeper.

NOC had a number of other chances in the first half but the game was 1-0 at half.

Ten minutes into the second half Hannah Hembree scored a goal from the edge of the box that lobbed over the goalkeeper. Hembree was assisted from Janet Moreno.

Moreno then got herself on the score sheet when she won the ball out of midfield and dribbled around three players and calmly placed the ball in the back of the net. NOC rounded off the scoring in 87th minute when Tilly Wills received a ball from Savannah Nelson and finished within the box.

"I am really happy for the ladies to get this win at home," said coach Jade Ovendale.  "We have been trying some new tactics in training so it was our first time implementing these against an opponent. I think we did well considering we haven't had much time to adjust. It was a step forward for us and something we will continue to work on. We still have a lot of improvement to make, however I am happy with the result. It is also nice to see four different goals corers and a clean sheet for (keeper) Madeline Kindred. I thought Skylar Yocham was very active for us and Maddie Cochran is on a different level right now."

The Mavs are on the road next Wednesday at Rose State in the region opener.
