Lady Mavs lose opener at Cloud County

CONCORDIA, Kansas --  NOC opened the 2018 soccer season at Cloud County Community College (KS) losing 3-2 in overtime.

Heading into the game, the Lady Mavs were ranked 13th and the Cloud County T-Birds were ranked 14th.

NOC trailed Cloud County 2-0 in the second half before sophomore Megan Deshazo scored two goals in a five minute period to tie the game at 2-2 with 23 minutes remaining.  Mayra Vega and Kayla Mireles assisted on Deshazo's goals.

Tied 2-2 after 90 minutes, the T-Birds scored in the 92nd minute and held off the Lady Mavs winning 3-2 in a battle of Top 20 teams.

"With all the adversity that has happened this past weekend, I am proud of how the girls stepped up and played," said interim head coach Jade Ovendale.   "It was a hot day and a lot of girls played some heavy minutes, to take Cloud into overtime at a difficult venue showed that the girls possess grit, which will be vital throughout season."

"We had some great chances towards the end of the game to take it, but just fell short. We will be tweaking some areas and focusing for our home opener tomorrow against Butler," Ovendale added.

Cloud County outshot NOC 17-10.
