Lady Mavs win Region II tournament title

  MIAMI, Oklahoma -- The NOC Lady Mavs punched their ticket to the NJCAA District "I" Tournament Sunday winning the Region II Tournament at NEO in Miami.

  Tenth ranked NOC (17-1) beat Rose State 3-2 in overtime Sunday to win the title.  They advanced to the finals with a win over NEO Saturday on penalty kicks 3-0.

  The Region II tournament title was the third straight for the NOC women.

NOC 3, Rose State 2, (OT)

  NOC beat Rose State 3-2 in overtime Sunday afternoon on a Megan Deshazo goal assisted by Morgyn Knell in the 5th minute of overtime at NEO.

  NOC trailed Rose 2-1 in the finals when Morgyn Knell found Megan Deshazo for a goal in the 87th minute tying the game at 2-2.

  Trailing 1-0 at half, the Lady Mavs came out a little bit more composed as Rachel Brantley would dribble a defender forcing her to foul in the box, creating a penalty kick.

  Aubrey Welker would convert the penalty kick to tie the game at the 68 minute mark.

  Rose State scored the first goal in the finals in the 36th minute. 

NOC 1, NEO 1 (NOC Penalty kicks 3-0)

  Saturdays win was not without drama as sophomore keeper Monica Davis saved the Lady Mavs after 90 minutes and two overtimes.

  Gifty Ayew Asare scored the lone NOC goal in regulation with NEO tying the score at 1-1 forcing overtime.

   "We didn't think that we were going to penalty kicks because we were the better team," said coach Juan Castillo.   "We attacked, played the entire game on their half but this is soccer and we have to put shots in the back of the net. Although when we knew we were going to penalty kicks we were extremely confident in Monica (Davis) in that capacity. This is a girl that stopped a penalty kick against Mexico's National team." 

   Davis blocked NEO's first penalty kick, then Morgan Medina converted for the Lady Mavs, Monica Davis would see the ball go out of sight when NEO's player kicked out of the goal frame on the second shot.

   NOC captain Kariss Dunson would make the game more interesting by hitting the crossbar and but Davis would again block NEO's next shot. 

   Kayla Mireles would score for NOC and finally once again Davis blocked NEO's final shot to give the Lady Mavs the win and a berth in the finals.

  The NOC men fell to NEO Saturday 2-0.  The loss ended the Mavs season at 12-5-1.

   NOC Soccer Notes:  Five NOC Lady Mavs were selected to the NJCAA Region II All-Tournament Team.    Goalkeeper Monica Davis was selected the MVP while Rachel Brantley, Rebekah Brantley, Kariss Dunson, and Megan Deshazo were named Region II All Tournament.

   NOC's Reece Harrison was named to the NJCAA Region II All-Tournament Team. 

  Also, a number of NOC players were named All-Region for their regular season efforts. 

  Rojay Smith, Prince Dom Afriyie, and Bryson Reed were named to the men's squad while for the women's team Gifty Ayew Asare was named Region MVP.  Aubrey Welker, Megan Deshazo, and  Kayla Mireles were named all region.
