Women's Soccer Wins at Rose State

Women's Soccer Wins at Rose State

It has been 3 years since the Northern women's team last won at Rose State. The Lady Mavs started their game  a little shaky and it took them around 10 mins to settle down and start playing the style of play that has been their trade mark for the past year.

Monica Davis had a great evenning recording 5 saves in the match. After the first 15 mins of Rose State pressure the Lady Mavs started to dominate and control the field creating different chances to go on top of the scoreboard. Gifty Ayew Asare had a chance that just went wide in the 24th minute. Freshman Mayra Vega went in at the 25th minute mark and was a dangerous threat for the Rose State defenders, leaving them behind in multiple ocassions and generating some great moves that the crowd that was present cheered every time. Rebekah Brantley also picked up a rebound outside the box and her shot just went wide. Asare got a good header on a corner kick that also went wide.

It was until the 39th minute that freshman and NSU transfer Kayla Mireles received a ball from also freshman Denise Diaz and controled inside the box to make a quick turn and take a strong shot that defeated Rose State's goalkeeper to put the Lady Mavs on top of the scoreboard 1-0.

Within 3 minutes of the second half a miscomunication in Nothern's back line gave the chance to Rose State to tie the game. This cause a little of distress in the Northern side and allowed Rose State to control the game at moments. But the Lady Mavs never stopped attacking and creating chances to score. Megan Mayfield dribbled a defender inside the box and created some danger with her speed on the flanks and it was until again Kayla Mireles went in the game with 15 minutes remaining in the game that Megan Deshazo recovered a ball that everyone thought it was lost and pass it back to Rebekah Brantely which crossed for Kayla to control and defeat the goalkeeper again with her shot.

Coach Castillo's impressons of the game: "I believe we complicated ourselves today. We had a controlled game and because of lack of communication we allowed Rose to get confident that they could come back. Once the girls settled down and went back to our style of play we were able to regain control for most of the important periods of the game. This team has tremondous potential. They have already achieved good results but we still need to work hard and stay focused in our goals for the season. I believe the team is playing at 50% of their capacity."

Kayla Mireles: "I was nervous going in the game but I held my composure and when I scored my first goal my adrenaline was high above the sky because I just scored my first college goal!. When I went back in I told myself I get another chance to show them what I'm made of and I went in and scored. It was just a relief being about to win the game for us and winning some of the girl's trust"
