Mavs softball splits two in season opener

PONCA CITY, Oklahoma --The Northern Oklahoma College Mavs Softball team split a pair of games against Neosho (KS) in their season opener.

Tuesday's games were the first for new head coach Tori Wilde.

In Game 1, the NOC Mavs rallied with seven runs in the sixth inning to earn a 7-4 win over Neosho.

Katie Light had a two-run double for the Mavs to help key the inning.

Jenna Chassie earned the win in the circle, allowing just two earned runs and striking out four over seven innings.

In Game 2, the Mavs jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then Neosho rallied to take a 9-4 lead.  The Mavs battled back with three runs in the seventh but lost 9-7.

Nunuz, Madison Kettler, and Kaylie Murray had two hits each, Hallie Durkee had two runs batted in.

Meagan Bellar was the starter with relief help from Laney Hover.  Hover allowed just one run in five innings striking out two.

"It was great to finally get on the field today," said coach Wilde.  "The girls worked hard and showed a lot of resiliency. Jenna (Chassie) fought hard in game one and when your leader in the circle is fighting the others follow. Laney (Hover) came in as relief in game two. She stepped up only allowing one earned run in five innings. Hopefully nerves have calmed and we can take care of the routine plays successfully in our next outing."

The games were scheduled for Tonkawa but was moved to Ponca City due to field conditions.
