Northern "Throws" Another Game Away

Northern and NEO played a game that went down to the final seconds.  Unfortunately for the Mavericks they would give the game away with just four seconds to go.

Sunday's loss dropped the Mavs to 2-9 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.

Northern controlled most of the first half playing with a strong wind at their back, but could not get many shots off and the half would end scoreless.

It didn't take the Mavs long to get on the scoreboard in the second half.  Matthew Cuellar stole the ball from an NEO defender and passed to Gio Herrera.  Gio played the ball to George Robinson and George beat the NEO goalkeeper with a long shot.  NEO would tie the game two minutes later on a corner kick that the Mavs failed to clear.  An NEO player found the ball right in front of the Northern goal and tapped it in.

The game seemed destined for overtime until the Mavs had a throw in with ten seconds left in the game in their defensive third.  For some reason the Mavericks threw the ball into their own box.  The Mavericks goalkeeper, Euan Morrison, couldn't not clear the ball, and Norseman player blocked the ball into the open net with four seconds left to play in the game.  NEO would win 2-1.

"I have been coaching for twenty-three years and have never seen an ending like that.  We literally gave the game away.  It was a new level of devastation in a season that has seen its fair share.  We have been our own worst enemy all season long, and unfortunately we haven't learned how to win.  I have to find a way to get through to these guys because the season is not over, but we can't continue like this."  Coach Michael DuRoy
