Northern Shuts Out Eastern 3-0

Northern Shuts Out Eastern 3-0

Northern traveled to Wilburton, Oklahoma for their last game of six straight road games.  The weather was unkind with the game time temperature at ninety-seven degrees.

The game started a little slow with both teams conserving their energy in the extreme conditions.  Neither team produced too many chances with Eastern having two first half shots and Northern having three.  The first half was played mostly in the midfield.  Harry Yorke, freshman from England, received his first playing time of the season and came through big for the Mavs controlling the midfield by winning the majority of the balls played in the air and starting the Mavericks attack with a great range of passing.

Northern took control of the game early in the second half.  Matthew Cuellar dribbled to the endline in the box and rainbowed a defender before being taken down for a penalty.  George Robinson stepped to the penalty spot and calmly finished the chance putting the Mavericks ahead 1-0.  Moments later Shukri Farias broke in behind the Eastern defense and crossed the ball to Robinson, who hit the ball first time into the side netting of the far post to put the Mavs up 2-0.  Robinson put the game away with his third goal off an assist from Gavin RenoRuben Flores and Cole Weiberg combined in goal to pick up the shut out.

"It was a big win for us.  I'm really happy for the guys.  Obviously George was great with the goals, but Harry Yorke may have been the best player on the field today.  It's awesome to finally have him out there.  It was our first clean sheet of the year.  Our back line and midfield did a really nice job of limiting their shots and Ruben and Cole were good in goal."
