Mavericks fall to 0-1 in Conference

Rose State defeated Northern 2-1 in the conference opener.  It was a windy day in Midwest City, Oklahoma and the wind played a role in the outcome of the game with all three goals being scored going with the wind.  Rose State took the wind in the first half and got out to a two goal lead.  The first goal came from a free kick just outside of the Mavs penalty box.  The second goal was scored on a cross that beat two Northern defenders before a Raider scored from point blank range.

The Mavericks took control of the game in the second half and got on the scoreboard when George Robinson scored off of a cross from Rahmon Oduborisa.  It looked like Northern was going to force overtime with several shots just missing or forcing saves from the Rose State goalkeeper.  Robinson had a header that looked destined to go in the top corner, but the Raiders goalkeeper made an outstanding diving save to preserve the win for Rose State.

"We certainly haven't had the start of the season that we hoped and expected to have, but I don't think our record is indicative of what type of team we are and can become.  Bad starts to seasons are kind of like losing a wheel on the take-off of a long flight.  It's rough, but if you survive it there is plenty of time to fix the problem before the end.  Of course if you can't get the problem fixed the end is worse than the beginning.  That is what we are doing now.  We are fixing problems and trying to get better every day."  Coach Michael DuRoy
