Northern Collects First Win of the Season

BARTLESVILLE, Oklahoma -- Northern eased past Oklahoma Wesleyan University's Reserve team 3-1 on a warm evening in Bartlesville.  The Mavericks started strong but couldn't break through until late in the first half with a John Woodhead goal.  Kareem Williams played a ball in behind the Eagles defense for Woodhead to run on to.  Woodhead calmly slipped the ball past the Wesleyan goalkeeper to put the Mavs up 1-0.

Oklahoma Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the last minute of the half on an own goal by the Mavs.

Northern started the second half very strong with a goal in the first five minutes by George RobinsonDallas King picked up the assist.  After the goal Oklahoma Wesleyan created several chances, but Northern goalkeeper Euan Morrison made three saves to preserve the lead for the Mavericks.

Alex Ellis put the game away with the Mavs' third goal off an assist from George Robinson.

"Overall I thought it was a decent performance," said coach Michael Duroy.   "I challenged the guys at half-time to finish their chances.  I give credit to George and Alex for scoring two in the second half.  We easily should have had four or five though.  Wesleyan played a really high line, and the only space was in behind.  We should have done a better job exploiting it.  I thought Francisco Lopez and Kareem Williams played well in the back, and Rahmon Oduborisa had a good game in the midfield.  Gio Herrera and Brooks Rogers have done a great job all year for us as central midfielders."  Coach Michael DuRoy

The Mavs go on the road again Sunday at Crowder College.  Kick off is set for 2 p.m.
