#16 Cowley Scores Late to Top Mavs 3-1

ARKANSAS CITY, Kansas -- Sixteenth ranked Cowley College lived up to their national ranking Wednesday night in Arkansas City, Kansas topping Northern 3-1.  The Mavericks started fast controlling the first few minutes of the game.  After the initial barrage by the Mavs the Tigers were able to settle in to the game dominating possession for the rest of the half.  However Northern was able to limit Cowley's possession to their own half and midfield.

In the thirty-fourth minute Northern scored an own goal off a Cowley corner putting the Tigers up 1-0.  Neither team would be able to generate many scoring chances the rest of the half.  Cowley had five shots in the first half with just one forcing a save from Northern goalkeeper, Ruben Flores.

The Mavs started strong in the second half creating several chances including a goal by George Robinson, but Robinson was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed.  Northern tied the game midway through the second half off a Kareem Williams free kick.  Williams played a nice ball to the back post and Alex Ellis was able to beat the keeper for the tying goal.

Late in the game it looked like the Mavericks would go ahead when Shukri Farias blasted a shot from just outside the box, but the shot sailed inches over the crossbar.  Cowley would take the lead with eleven minutes to go in the game off a long shot that was misjudged by the Maverick goalkeeper and floated into the top corner of the goal.  The Tigers would add an insurance goal less than two minutes later to put the game out of reach.

"First off I want to congratulate Cowley on a hard fought win.  They have a very good team.  They are certainly one of the top teams in the country.  They deserved to win tonight.  I will say that our guys executed our game plan really well, and played extremely hard for all ninety minutes.  I was very proud of their effort and organization.  They did a great job of limiting Cowley's possession to the midfield for the most part." Mavericks coach Michael DuRoy

DuRoy continued, "We are learning and growing from every game.  Tonight we played so well, but the second goal deflated us.  We dropped our heads and lost concentration for a few minutes and they were able to get the third goal to put the game out of reach.  We all need to be able to put adversity behind us and continue to focus on the game, including myself.  I did a poor job after the goal of refocusing the guys.  I do feel like we are moving in the right direction.  We are improving."

The Mavs fell to 0-2

Northern continues their six game road swing at Allen County Community College Saturday.  The game is scheduled to kick off at 4:00.
