Men's Soccer Remains at the Top of the Conference

Northern moved to 6-1 in conference with a rain soaked 3-1 win at Murray State College on Sunday.  Murray State had to adjust their field, and their players and coaches spent hours working on the field just to make it playable.  Despite their efforts there was still numerous spots on the field with standing water that would stop the ball from rolling.

Jesus Aleman put the Mavs in the lead early in the game finishing a pass from Darrion Wilson.  Wilson tracked down a loose ball in the penalty box and tapped the ball over to Aleman for the shot.  Moments later Brian Romero, the conference leader in assists, played a free kick into the box for Jaime Ponce to head past the Aggie goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.

Leonardo Fogarty pushed the lead to 3-0 after taking a fantastic pass from Obed Santos and calmly beating the Murray State goalkeeper.  Murray State would get on the scoreboard late with a free kick that mishandled by Maverick goalkeeper, Cristhofer Monje, and tapped in by an Aggie player.

"First off I want to credit the hard work of the Murray State coaches and players for getting the field ready to play.  They put in a ton of work.  The conditions were not great.  It was very difficult to play soccer.  We knew that the tougher team would win.  I thought our guys were on Sunday.  Cin Mang dominated the first half, and our back line of Jaime Ponce, Mitchell Wilson, Brandon Wright, and Victor Bernal were incredible.  Games like this are often decided by a mistake in the back or someone slipping and falling.  We made very few mistakes, and our guys did a tremendous job of staying on their feet." The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday travelling to Bethany to take on Southwestern Christian University before returning home for the final two games of the regular season Saturday and Monday.
