Men's Soccer Continues Unbeaten Streak

Northern moved to a perfect 5-0 in conference with a convincing 5-1 victory over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Oklahoma.  Brian Romero opened the scoring on a penalty kick early in the first half.  It was Romero's first goal of the season.  Late in the first half Romero played a perfect pass to the back post to Obed Santos.  Santos headed the ball past the Norseman goalkeeper to put the Mavericks up 2-0 at the half.

Leonardo Fogarty continued his hot goal scoring streak with an unassisted goal early in the second half that basically put the game out of reach.  Fogarty stole the ball from an NEO defender and calmly beat the goalkeeper.  Two minutes later sophomore defender, Austin White, scored the first goal of his career with a long shot that beat the goalkeeper to the far post.  Romero was credited with the assist.  NEO scored on a penalty kick midway through the second half to make the game interesting, but Fogarty would strike again to ice the game for the Mavs.  Romero, the conference leader in assists, once again had the assist.

The game was delayed for twenty minutes in the second half with an injury to a Norseman player.  The player suffered an injury after a hard collision with a Northern defender, and had to be removed from the field by ambulance.

"It is always tough to get a win at NEO, so I'm happy with that.  We are starting to score goals, which is a positive.  Our whole back line is playing well, and Brian Romero is on a different level in the midfield.  He is so dangerous with the ball.  Leonardo Fogarty started very slowly, so I pulled him, and challenged him to play harder.  To his credit he did.  A lot of players would have sulked and went into a shell, but he went back out and played the way we need him to play." Mavericks coach Michael DuRoy

DuRoy continued, "I hated to see the injury.  When something like that happens it makes you just want to stop the game.  Hopefully he is alright.  I know I speak for all of our guys in saying we hope to see him back out as soon as possible."

The Mavericks next game is Thursday when they host Eastern Oklahoma State College at 3:00.
