Northern Moves to 4-0 in Conference

The Mavericks stayed unbeaten in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 3-1 win over Murray State College.

Brandon Wright got the Mavs off to a quick start in the second minute with a goal.  His long cross hung up in the strong wind and drifted into the top corner of the goal to put the Mavericks up 1-0.  Northern took advantage of the strong wind at their backs getting several shots on goal, but the Aggies goalkeeper was able to keep Murray State in the game with some nice saves.

The Aggies would tie the game late in the first half on a penalty kick.  Northern goalkeeper, Cristhofer Monje, saved the first penalty kick, but it was ruled that he moved off his line before the shot was taken and Murray State was awarded another try.  To make matters worse for Monje he was kicked in the face after making the initial save while diving on the loose ball.  The Aggie player that kicked Monje was given a red card forcing Murray State to play a man down for the rest of the game.

Northern would retake the lead just four minutes later off a Brian Romero free kick that was headed in by Jaime Ponce.  The score would remain 2-1 until just after half time.  Jaime Ponce played a great ball in to Leonardo Fogarty who beat the goalkeeper to put the Mavs up 3-1.  Northern, a player up, went on to dominate possession in the second half with Murray State seeing very little of the ball.  Late in the game the Aggies went down another man as a player was sent off with another red card.  The Mavs basically played keep away running out the clock and moving their conference record to 4-0.

"It was a much needed win.  Murray State has a nice team with some dangerous players.  I am very proud of our guys.  We are asking a lot of Jaime Ponce and he is really coming through for us.  We are playing him out of position at centerback, and he is doing a great job there.  Today we played him at forward for about half of the first half, because I felt like we needed goals with the wind at our back, and he scored a goal.  Cin Mang is having a tremendous year for us as well.  He does all the little things that most people don't notice, but it's noticeable when he isn't on the field." Mavericks coach Michael DuRoy

DuRoy continued, "We have made it through the first half of conference play unbeaten at 4-0.  Now we start the second half, and we have to go on the road for three of the four games.  We have to continue to focus on the process each day of getting better and respecting every opponent.  Our margin for error is so thin that if we don't do almost every thing right it makes it difficult to win."
