Mavericks Stay Unbeaten in Conference Play

Sunday's game between Rose State College and Northern was a battle of the two top teams in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference.  Both teams came into the game unbeaten in conference play.  The game lived up to the hype as it took overtime to separate the teams.  Northern scored first early in the game off a corner from Brian RomeroVictor Bernal found the ball at the top of the box and wrapped a shot around several Raider defenders and the goalkeeper into the corner of the goal.  Rose State would tie the game with ten minutes left in the first half on a free kick from just outside the box.  Northern would break the tie early in the second half when Daniel Perez found Leonardo Fogarty streaking in behind the Raider defense.  Fogarty dribble around the Rose State goalkeeper and shot the ball into an empty net.  The Raiders would equalize late in the game off a corner with just over seven minutes in regulation.  Neither team could find a goal in the last few minutes.  Rose State did have a great chance when a shot beat the Northern goalkeeper, Cristhofer Monje, but Brandon Wright cleared the ball off of the line to send the game to overtime.  It didn't take the Mavericks long to finish the game in overtime.  Just thirty seconds into the first overtime period Brian Romero played a ball to Jesus Aleman.  Aleman spun on two defenders and his shot from just outside the box beat the Rose State goalkeeper to the near post to give the Mavericks the win.

"It was a hard fought game that really could have gone either way.  We missed some chances that we probably should have scored and Rose State did as well.  I was proud of how hard our guys played.  It wasn't always pretty, but they found a way to win.  Honestly, I don't think I helped much today.  Rose made a few adjustments, and I didn't do a good job of putting our guys in the best position to win.  We have been working hard on finishing, so I'm proud that the guys scored three today.  The win puts us in a great spot in the conference, but every game is tough.  We will need to be ready for Thursday, because Murray State has a good team." Northern coach Michael DuRoy

Northern is now 3-0 in conference.  The Mavs will be back in action Thursday hosting Murray State at 4:00.
