Northern Stays On Top of Conference With Win at Eastern

The Mavericks made the long bus ride to Wilburton, Oklahoma for a Sunday afternoon game against Eastern Oklahoma State College.  The weather was perfect for a game with the temperature in low 70's.  Northern got off to a bit of slow start as the Mountaineers controlled the possesion in the early part of the game.  However it was the Mavs who struck first in the sixth minute.  Northern had a nice combination of passes that led to Brandon Wright getting behind the Eastern defense before playing a beatiful pass in to Jesus Aleman.  Aleman brought the ball down in the box and blasted a shot past the Mountaineer goalkeeper to put the Mavericks ahead.  Northern controlled the game from that point on.  The Mavs would outshoot Eastern eight to one in the first half, and twenty-six to three in the second half.  Many of the chances in the second half came from point blank range, but were either shot wide of the goal or saved by the Eastern goalkeeper.  One shot did beat the goalkeeper, but a Mountaineer defender was there to clear the ball off of the line before it went in.  The Mavericks inability to put the game away with another goal left the game in doubt until the end.  Eastern had two good chances to get the equalizer late in the game with freekicks near the Mavs goal, but Northern was able to clear the ball away and hold on for the win.

"Any time you can get a conference win on the road it's a good thing, but we made it harder than it needed to be.  If we finished a small percentage of our chances the game would have been a blowout.  I give their goalkeeper credit though.  He made a few amazing saves.  I am also very pleased that we are creating chances now.  I feel like it is only a matter of time before it all comes together for this team.  Jaime Ponce and Danny Perez played great on the back line, and Cristhofer Monje got his first shut out of the year."
