Dodge City Tops Northern 2-0

The Mavericks dropped their second game of the season 2-0 at Dodge City on Wednesday afternoon.  The game was evenly played throughout the ninety minutes with almost every statistic being equal.  Northern got off to a strong start with the majority of the possession in the first half, but the Mavs couldn't find the net despite some very good chances.  Dodge City scored early in the second half when a cross found an open player at the top of the box who finished with a nicely placed shot.  The goal seemed to awaken the Mavericks as Northern created two very good chances immediately following the goal.  Jaime Ponce had a shot from close range that forced the Dodge City goalkeeper into a great save.  Shortly after that Victor Bernal beat the goalkeeper with a shot, but a Dodge City defender cleared the ball off the line to keep the Mavs off the scoreboard.  Dodge City would add another goal with just over a minute to go off a counter attack when Northern had everyone pushed forward to try to get the equalizer.

"I was more pleased with our effort today.  I thought we competed well.  The game was really evenly played.  The difference was they finished two of their chances and we didn't.  We had a really easy chance in the first half that we should have scored.  Early in the second half they get a shot from almost the identical spot and score.  That was the difference in the game."

We don't need to panic.  We knew these first few games would be tough.  We were in both games up until the end.  Usually games have four to ten game changing plays.  We have to start making those plays.  When we do we will win." Mavericks coach Michael DuRoy
