Mavs Drop Opener in Overtime

Northern traveled to Concordia, Kansas to take on Cloud Community College on a scorching hot, windy afternoon.

Northern had the wind in the first half and created several chances, but were denied by good saves from the T-Bird goalkeeper and the post a few times.  Neither team could get on the scoreboard in the first half.  It didn't take the Mavs long to score in the second half going against the wind.  Seven minutes into the second half a Cloud defender slid to block a shot by Darrion Wilson and handled the ball in the box giving Northern a penalty kick.  Freshman forward, Leonardo Fogarty, blasted the penalty kick past the Cloud goalkeeper.

Cloud would control most of the play from that point on, but Maverick goalkeeper, Cristhofer Monje, made a few nice saves to preserve the lead.  Late in the game a Northern defender was called for a foul in the box resulting in a Cloud penalty kick.  The T-Birds converted the chance to tie the game with just eight minutes left to play.  Neither team could score from that point on sending the game to overtime.  Cloud would win the game in the first overtime when a T-Bird player broke in behind the Maverick back line and received a long pass before shooting the ball over the head of Monje for the game winner.

"It was tough game.  We knew it would not be a game of skill.  They are a big, physical team, and their field is so bumpy with grass so tall it's difficult to pass on the ground.  In situations like that the tougher teams usually wins and they were the tougher team.  We didn't play well at all in the second half.  Our effort was not good, and we fouled way too much.  Despite that we had a chance to win.  We have to learn to close out games like that.  I give credit to Cloud.  They outworked us and deserved the win.  We need to learn from this and improve."  Mavs coach Michael DuRoy

Next Game: Wednesday, August 29th at Dodge City Community College
