Northern Blows By NEO 3-1

Northern kept their hopes alive for a conference championship with a 3-1 win over NEO on a windy afternoon in Tonkawa.  The wind may have had more influence on the game than any player.  The Mavs went against the wind in the first half, but were able to control the early play.  Rojay Smith put the Mavericks in the lead in the eleventh minute when he curled a shot into the top right corner of the goal.  Chase Venable had the assist.  From that point on NEO controlled most of the play for the rest of the first half.  Midway through the first half NEO stole a pass and launched a long shot with the wind that just beat Bryson Reed to tie the game.  Neither team could generate many legitimate chances for the rest of the first half.

It wouldn't take the Mavs long to take advantage of the wind in the second half as Jaime Ponce scored just five minutes after the break.  Prince Dom Afriyie had the assist.  Midway through the second half Bryson Reed played a long ball over the top of the NEO defense that Jason White ran on to and dribbled past the NEO goalkeeper to put the game out of reach.

The win moves the Mavericks record to 10-4-1 and 3-1-1 in conference.  Northern is guaranteed to finish at least second in the conference with a chance to finish first with a win in their last conference game and a Rose State loss to Eastern Oklahoma State.
