Northern Blasts Murray State 7-0

Northern ran their unbeaten streak to seven games with a dominant performance blasting Murray State College 7-0.  Once again it Jaime Ponce that opened the Mavs scoring with a goal in the eighth minute.  Prince Dom Afriyie was credited with the first of his three assists on the day.  Four minutes later Afriyie broke in behind the Aggies defense again and slotted a perfect pass to Rojay Smith, who calmly beat a defender and passed the ball into the net to put the Mavs up 2-0.  Minutes later Afriyie would do the scoring himself from a near impossible angle on the end line.  Jose Mota had the assist.  Rojay Smith and Jaime Ponce would team up for the Mavericks fourth goal midway through the first half.  Ponce scored the goal and Smith had the assist.  That would end the day for Ponce, who pressed through the nearly ninety degree heat for twenty-five minutes despite being sick.  The Northern reserves would play the remainder of the first half scoreless.

Northern opened the second half with many of the starting lineup back in the game and it didn't take long for them put another point on the scoreboard.  Chase Venable served a great ball into the box and Rojay Smith, who is amongst the nations leaders in goals scored, volleyed it into the net from close range for his second goal of the game.  Three minutes later Venable would score his first goal of the season heading in a cross from Prince Dom AfriyieReece Harrison scored the Mavs last goal of the game off an assist from Rojay Smith.  It was perfect timing for the duo as their subs were standing at the half line waiting to replace them at the next stoppage in play.  Bryson Reed and Matthew Cross combined in goal for the Mavs second shut out in row.

Coach DuRoy was very pleased after the game.  "The guys played great today.  We had stretches during the game that were as good as I have seen as a coach here in twenty years.  The passing and movement were so sharp that Coach Jade and I watched as fans at times.  I love where we are at as team, but we can and need to improve to accomplish our goals.  We need to go back to work tomorrow in training and focus on the process of getting better."

Northern goes back on the road Sunday for a game against Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri at 2:00.  The Mavs record is 8-4-1.
