Northern Continues Unbeaten Streak

Northern ran their unbeaten streak to six games with an easy 3-0 win over Rose State College.  Northern chose to go with a fairly strong south wind in the first half, and took full advantage of the breeze.  In the beginning Rose State looked like they were going to control the game with good spacing and passing, but the Mavericks adjusted and took control of the game.  The Mavericks were able to find space in the Raider defense in the twentieth minute as Jose Mota found himself all alone on the right side of the field.  Mota dribbled down the sideline before his cross found Jaime Ponce in front of the goal.  Ponce beat the keeper to put the Mavs up 1-0.  Less than ten minutes later Jason White stole the ball near midfield and played a great ball in to Rojay Smith.  The Mavs top scorer calmly dribbled around the Raider goalkeeper before playing the ball into the empty net.  Northern wasn't done in the first half.  Just before halftime Victor Bernal played a ball in behind the Rose State defense to Prince Dom Afriyie.  Prince outraced two Raider defenders and beat the goalkeeper for the Mavs third goal.

Northern kept the pressure on in the second half taking six shots (four on goal) and creating six corner kicks to just four shots (none on goal) for Rose State and three corner kicks.  The game turned physical in the second half with Rose State being whistled for ten fouls and the Mavs for eleven.  Maverick goalkeepers Matthew Cross and Bryson Reed combined for the shut out.  Although the Maverick defense deserves a lot of the credit as none of Rose State's eight shots found the frame of the goal.

Coach Michael DuRoy was pleased after the win.  "It took us a little while to adjust to what Rose State was doing, but after we adjusted we created several chances.  Our midfield and defense completely stiffled their attack.  To not allow a shot on goal against a pretty good team is impressive.  Bryson Reed did a nice job of cutting out crosses as well.  Up front we were effecient.  We are playing very well right now."

Northern is now 7-4-1 and 2-1-1 in conference. The Mavs will go on the road Thursday for a game against Murray State College.
