Maverick Reserves Shine in 7-1 Win

Northern's starters had a short day in the Mavs 7-1 victory over Southwestern Christian University JV.  The Eagles helped the Mavericks out early in the game when Prince Dom Afriyie's cross was misplayed by a SWCU defender into his own goal giving the Mavs the lead just three minutes into the game.  Jaime Ponce would add to the lead just three minutes later heading in a cross from Jose Mota.  One minute later Rojay Smith scored off an assist from Jaime PonceKalon Henson scored his first goal as a Maverick in the fifteenth minute.  Henson intercepted an attempted clearance by the Eagles at the top of the box and blasted a shot into the upper corner of the goal.  The Maverick reserves would take over from that point on.  Jason White continued the scoring barrage with a goal in the thirtieth minute.  Zarius Wilson had the assist.  The Eagles got on the scoreboard early in the second half on a penalty kick just five minutes in to the half.  Moments later Jason White struck again for the Mavs.  Daniel Mutai was credited with the assist.  Kalon Henson would wrap up the scoring for the Mavs in the seventieth minute with a great shot from just outside the box after receiving a pass from Victor Bernal.

Coach Michael DuRoy was pleased with the play of the reserves.  "I was happy that the guys got so much time today.  They practice so hard.  We have some great, unselfish guys on our team.  Kalon Henson and Jason White were on top of their games finishing today.  I thought Victor Bernal controlled the midfield and Drew Pinckard and Brice McDougal did well in the back.  Matthew Cross didn't get much work in goal, but did a nice job when we needed him."

Northern will return to action Sunday at 4:00 in Tonkawa vs Rose State.
