Northern Shuts Out Pratt 3-0

Northern extended their shut out streak to 284 minutes with a 3-0 win over Pratt Wednesday.  The Mavs however didn't take long to get on the scoreboard as Rojay Smith scored in the eighteenth minute.  Bryson Reed played a ball to Jaime Ponce who flicked it behind the Beaver defense for Smith to run on to and calmly put into the net.  At the end of the first half Rojay Smith got in behind the Pratt defense and crossed the ball to Darrion Wilson who blasted a one-touch shot past the Pratt goalkeeper to put the Mavs up 2-0 at the break.

Northern dominated the second half pressuring the Pratt goal for almost the full forty-five minutes.  Jason White's free kick midway through the half looked to be going into the bottom corner of the goal until the Pratt keeper made an excellent diving save knocking the ball just wide of the goal.  Moments later Reece Harrison intercepted a pass near the half line, saw the goalkeeper off his line, and launched a half-volley toward the upper corner of the goal.  Once again the Pratt goalkeeper made an incredible save getting a fingertip to the ball deflecting it over the bar.  Late in the game Rojay Smith dribbled to the top of the box and combined with Darrion Wilson for a give and go that put him in behind the Pratt defense for his second goal of the game.

Northern coach Michael DuRoy praised his players after the game.  "Obviously Rojay is doing what he does.  His goal scoring is carrying us now.  It was good to see Darrion Wilson get a goal.  Daniel Perez and Reece Harrison are both playing great.  Danny is so solid in the back.  He is tough to beat and his passing out of the back is excellent.  Reece is playing on another level right now.  He is the engine of our team.  Jaime Ponce had to move to center forward today and did an incredible job.  He has been telling me all season he could play up there.  He got his chance today due to injuries, and really performed well.  Bryson Reed is doing a great job in goal.  We have a lot of injuries right now.  We need to get guys healthy because we have some important games coming up."

The Mavericks return to action Sunday at 4:00 in Tonkawa against Eastern Oklahoma State College.
