Mavericks and Norsemen Tie 0-0

Northern and NEO A&M played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in the rain at Miami on Sunday evening.  The game was played mostly in the midfield with both teams creating a few goal scoring chances, but neither was able to finish.  Northern had few good chances early with John Woodhead and Reece Harrison both getting shots on goal, but the NEO goalkeeper was able to make the save on both occasions.  Jaime Ponce nearly scored for the Mavs on header but was once again turned away.  NEO's best chance came on a long shot that skipped off the wet turf right in front of Northern keeper, Bryson Reed, who made a nice save.

Northern controlled most of the second half, but once again couldn't get the ball in the net.  Jason White had several good chances that just missed the target, and Darrion Wilson's 1v1 with the goalkeeper was saved.

The Mavs looked like they would win the game in the first overtime when Prince Dom Afriyie sped past the Norsemen back line and ripped a shot to the near post, but the Norse goalkeeper had it covered and made a nice save to preserve the shutout.  The Norsemen had a good chance to start the second overtime with a cross into the box that Chase Venable cleared away with a diving header.  The Mavs best chance in the second overtime came off the foot of Doug Wilson.  Wilson crushed a half volley into the upper corner of the goal, but once again the NEO goalkeeper made a great save.

Northern coach Michael DuRoy was pleased with the Mavericks effort.  "It's always tough at NEO.  The turf is fast and with the rain it was even faster.  We are a team that likes to spread our opponents out and try to take advantage of 1v1s in space, but it's hard to do that on their small field.  NEO always plays very hard as well.  They gave a great effort and our guys did too.  We had to make some adjustments at halftime.  We played the second half in a system that we had not practiced or played in, and the guys excuted it really well.  Our back line played fantastic.  Daniel Perez, Jeff Rhea, Josh Peters, Jose Mota, and Chase Venable were really good.  Bryson Reed was good in goal, and Reece Harrison was all over the place."
