Barton Tops Northern 2-1

Barton Community College beat Northern 2-1 on a hot day in Great Bend, Kansas.  Barton came out strong and controlled most of the possession throughout the game.  Despite the Cougars having most of the ball the Mavericks were able to create several chances in the first half and limit most of Barton's shots to long shots well outside the box.  Barton was finally able to break through with a nice combination that led to an open player in the box for an easy goal with under five minutes to play in the half.

The Mavs started the second half strong with Prince Dom Afriyie beating several Cougar defenders before being taken down in the box.  The referee deemed there was no foul, and did not grant the Mavs a penalty kick.  A decision Maverick head coach, Michael DuRoy, vociferously disagreed with leading to the referee issuing him a red card.  Coach Jade Ovendale ably took over the coaching duties for the rest of the game.  Barton would take a 2-0 lead midway through the second half with a cross to the far post that was nicely finished just past the Maverick goalkeeper Bryson Reed.  The Mavs were able to control a lot of the play from that point on creating several chances to get on the scoreboard.  Northern drew within one goal with ten minutes left when Afriyie's free kick into the box was handled by a Barton defender.  Rojay Smith converted the penalty kick to bring the Mavs within one, but Northern could not find the equalizer as time ran out.

Northern coach Michael DuRoy praised Barton after the win, "They are a very good team.  Maybe one of the best in the country.  They beat a legitimate top 20 team 7-2 earlier in the year.  They move the ball quickly and can break down your defense.  It took us a while to adjust to the speed of play, but once the guys did we played well.  Jeff Rhea is becoming a great center back, and our midfield did a nice job of playing within the system."  "Obviously I'm disappointed in myself for getting a red card.  I let the team down and I need to be a better example for the guys.  I try to teach them about responsibility and accountability, and I need to hold myself to the same standard.  I take responsibility for the loss.  I have to be better.  Even though we didn't get a result today I believe we have a really good team.  Our best soccer is ahead of us."
