Dodge City Upsets Northern 1-0

Dodge City came out fast and scored a goal just four minutes into the game.  The Conquistadors would spend the rest of the game defending for their lives.  Dodge City broke in down the right side of the Mavs defense before beating Maverick goalkeeper Bryson Reed.  That would be Dodge City's only shot on goal until late in the game.  In the end it didn't matter as the Conquistador goalkeeper and defenders made the loan goal stand up with some stellar defending.

The Mavericks had chance after chance on goal but couldn't capitalize.  The best of which may have been a point blank shot by Rojay Smith that the Dodge City goalkeeper made an amazing save on to keep the shut out alive.  Also in the first half Reece Harrison's header bounced off the crossbar before being cleared by the Dodge defense.

Northern put more pressure on Dodge City in the second half as the Conquistadors could not get out of their own half.  Dodge City's goalkeeper was again up to the task as were his defenders.  Dodge City defenders were credited with three saves after clearing the ball off the line saving sure goals by the Mavs.  John Woodhead and Rojay Smith both seemed to have sure goals that were cleared off the line by defenders.  Northern dominated every statistic outshooting Dodge City twenty-two to six and led in corner kicks ten to four, but in the end Dodge City had enough to hold on to the win.

Maverick head coach Michael DuRoy said, "Credit has to go to Dodge City.  They scored early and defended so hard for the rest of the game.  That is not easy to do.  We had so many chances.  I'm disappointed that we weren't able to finish one or two, but again you have to give them credit.  Their goalkeeper had an amazing game.  He made some saves that I thought would be goals for sure, and I think there were three separate occasions where defenders cleared balls off the line when we did beat the keeper.  Overall we played well.  We just couldn't score.  That happens in soccer.  We aren't going to overreact to the loss.  We will be fine."
