Mavericks Shut Out 7th Ranked Cloud

Northern topped seventh ranked Cloud County Community College 1-0.  The Mavericks came out fast controlling the early portion of the game, and creating several chances.  The Cloud defense was up to the task turning away wave after wave of Northern attacks.  The best chance of the first half came off the head of Northern forward Kalon Henson, but the Thunderbird goalkeeper made the save to keep the Mavs off the scoreboard.  The first half ended with just five shots for the Mavericks and only three for the Thunderbirds.  Cloud had more yellow cards in the first half than shots on goal, picking up four in the first half.  Three of the yellow cards were issued to Cloud players attempting to match the pace of Northern midfielder Prince Dom Afriyie

The Mavericks just as they did in the first game came out quickly in the second half scoring in less than two minutes after the break.  Darrion Wilson found an open Rojay Smith at the top of the box and the Sophomore from Jamaica shot into the upper right corner of the goal.  Cloud was able to gain the momentum after the goal and control most of the possession from that point on, but with no success.  The Mavs were happy to sit back and concede possession to the Thunderbirds in the midfield.  Despite not having as much possession in the second half Northern still created multiple scoring chances and produced four corner kicks in the second half to just one for Cloud.

Northern coach Michael DuRoy was pleased with the win.  "It was a good win, but I don't think any of our guys are overly excited or impressed with ourselves.  Cloud has a good team.  It was an even game that could have went either way.  We needed a tough game and they gave it to us.  Our guys got a little tired in the second half.  It's the first time through two scrimmages and a game that our starters have played past the sixty minute mark and it showed.  We have a lot still to work on, but I'm proud of the boys."

Northern's next game will be Thursday at 3:00 vs Dodge City Community College.
