Thirty-five players reported to Tonkawa on August 3rd to open preseason training for the 2017 season.  The Mavericks have nine returning Sophomores, and six returning starters.  Rojay Smith (Kingston, Jamaica) returns as the Mavs leading goal scorer with twelve goals in 2016.  Reece Harrison (Newcastle, England) returns after leading Northern in assist in 2016 with seven while picking up seven goals of his own.  The Mavericks are set in goal with both goalkeepers returning from 2016.  Matthew Cross (Sachse, Texas) and Bryson Reed (Stillwater, Oklahoma) split time in goal last year.  Cross was amongst the leaders in the nation in several goalkeeping statistical categories and Reed was selected All Region.  Chase Venable (Stillwater, Oklahoma) returns as a threat on the wing for the Mavs after starting every game in 2016.  Prince Afriyie (London, England) spent much of 2016 injured, but still managed five goals in just eight starts.  Josh Peters (Tulsa, Oklahoma) returns on the back line for the Mavs after playing in every game in 2016 and picking up two starts.  Cory Reeves (Ardmore, OK) returns on the back line, and Pedro Contreras returns in the midfield from the 2016 team.

Twenty-six Freshmen have joined the roster for 2017.  The Mavericks will be counting on John Woodhead (Newcastle, England) to score goals having scored over fifty goals for his team last season in England.  Jaime Ponce (Enid, Oklahoma) joins the Mavs as a highly recruited midfielder.  The incoming Freshmen class includes several players that were standouts for West Side Alliance soccer club in Tulsa, Victor Bernal, Daniel Perez, Josue Zarate, Jose Mota, and Darrion Wilson.  Northern went across the Red River to pick up four talented incoming player: Doug Wilson (Wichita Falls, Texas), Austin White (Sherman, Texas), Kalon Henson (Arlington, Texas), and Isaac Salazar (Richmond, Texas).  Four local players join the Mavericks this year: Mitchell Wilson and Brice McDougal from Ponca City and Daniel Mutai and Jeff Rhea from Stillwater.

Northern will be going for their seventeenth Region 2 Championship in 2017.
