Mavs lose heartbreaker at Cowley

ARKANSAS CITY, Kansas -- Northern Oklahoma College dropped a 74-72 heartbreaker to Cowley County Wednesday night.

The Mavericks (4-2) battled from 10 points down in the second half only to see Trevion Lamar's short jumper go in and out at the buzzer that would have tied Cowley College in an exciting non-conference game Wednesday night.

Lamar led the Mavs with 24 points.

"We got the shot we wanted," said head coach Donnie Jackson.  "We'd take that shot every time in that situation, I am proud of our guys for coming back down 10 in the second half in a tough environment."

The Mavs suffered a tough blow when sophomore guard Demaree King suffered an injured wrist late in the first half and is expected to miss extended time if not the rest of the season."

"We'll miss Demaree," Jackson added.  "He's  a terrific shooter that has really come into his own this year as a player."

Wednesday's game was tied 37-37 at half but Cowley scored the first 10 points out of the locker room to take their largest lead 47-37.

NOC took their final lead 72-71 on a Deon Berrien basket with :24 left but Cowley hit three free throws down the stretch to win 74-72 staving off the Mavs on the game's final possession.

Keiodre Perry added 16 for the Mavs while Khobe Austin-Johnson added 13.  Berrien added 10 rebounds  while Lamar and Johnson added three steals each.
