Lamar's late free throws lead Mavs to 86-84 win

NOC freshman guard Trevion Lamar's two free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining gave the Mavericks a thrilling 86-84 win over Redlands Wednesday night at Foster Piper Fieldhouse.

The win improved the Maverick record to 16-3 and 5-0 in conference play.  NOC has won 11 in a row and 17 of 18.

NOC led the Cougars 78-71 with 2:40 left before Redlands tied the game at 84-84 with :25 left.  The Mavs then held for the final shot with Lamar being fouled on his last second shot attempt.

The freshman from Savannah, Georgia, calmly sank both free throws giving the Mavs the conference win.

Coach Donnie Jackson said he was proud of the Mavs for overcoming adversity.

"I'm proud of the guys resolve and how they stuck together to pull out a grinder win," Jackson said.  "It wasn't pretty and we weren't making shots tonight but we'll take a conference win no matter the circumstances."

"Give Redlands credit, Jackson added.  "They came in ready to play.  They are a dangerous team because of how well they shoot the ball."

Wednesday's game had many momentum swings, Redlands led by as many as 15 in the first half before NOC rallied late in the half trailing 43-35 at the break.

Northern then went on a 23-9 run to take a 58-52 lead at the 11 minute mark.  NOC built the lead to 73-58 before Redlands went on a 19-5 run to cut the lead to 78-77 with 2:24 left.

Khobe Austin-Johnson led the Mavs with 17 while Lamar added 16, Deon Berrien 15 and Amir Allen 14.  Berrien led the Mavs on the boards with 12 while Lamar added 10.
