Mavs' cheer earns National Title

The Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa Cheer Squad earned their 2nd National Championship in Competitive earning the Small Two-Year College Co-Ed Title in Anaheim, California Feb. 23-24.

The squad is coached by Karri Morrill.

The Mavs earned the title over two days of competition with a preliminary round and a final round.

"We were okay in the preliminary round but not what we needed to be," Morrill said.  "The preliminary score was 30 percent of the total score so we knew we needed to be on point for the final (70 percent).  I am so proud of this team for how they stepped up in the finals."

The squad has been working on their routine since before Christmas but with weather issues and class schedules, Morrill said it's was a challenge for the squad.

"We haven't had the practice time that we normally had and then we had to change our routine when Lauren Champlin was injured," she said.  "But again, this team really came together and overcame the challenges they faced."

"It's been a good group," she added.  "So many of them didn't cheer in high school or have not been a part of competitive cheer so this was an entire new experience for many of them."
