Mavs rally for doubleheader sweep of NOC Enid

In the battle of NOC's, the 13th ranked Mavs swept a doubleheader Thursday in Tonkawa over the 5th ranked Jets in Region 2 baseball action.

The Mavs (32-6-1) dominated Game 1 winning 15-0 and then rallied for a 14-13 walk-off win over the Jets (32-7).

In Game 1, the Mavs scored eight runs in the second and seven in the third to blow the game wide open winning 15-0 in five innings.

The Mavs out hit NOC Enid 13-1 with catcher Cacy Harper and Tanner long combing for 11 rbi's.

Harper hit two home runs while Long and Joey Pena added one each.

Chris Cloud added three hits and scored two runs.

Trevin Michael (7-2) was masterful on the mound allowing just one hit over five innings striking out four. "Trevin Michael did a great job setting the tone for us on the mound in game one," said head coach Ryan Bay.   "He kept hitters off balance all game a never really allowed them to find any rhythm at the plate. Throwing a one-hitter in wind conditions like that is pretty remarkable. Our hitters did a good job of attacking strikes up in the zone and were able to help us separate early. "

Game 2 looked to be a repeat of Game as the Mavs led 9-0 after three innings but the Jets battled all the way back tying the game at 9-9 in the eighth.

NOC then scored the go ahead run as Eric Gutierrez walked forcing home Pena and the Mavs led 10-9 after eight innings.

The Jets rallied once again against Long who came in to close the game for the Mavs scoring four runs to take a 13-10 lead.

NOC Tonkawa, however, rallied again as Cloud tripled home Kristopher Perez to cut the lead to 13-11.  Joey Pena's double just over third cut the lead to 13-12.

After a walk and an error, Gabe Griffith reached on an error scoring Pena and the Mavs had tied the game at 13-13.

Gutierrez then singled to center scoring Harper and the Mavs were 14-13 winners.

Pena had three hits and three rbi's while Griffith had four rbi's.  Cloud, Long and Gutierrez had two hits each.

Jack Edmunson was the starter going four innings.  Chase Bridges provided four innings out of the bullpen allowing two hits and one unearned run.

"Game 2 came down to the last at bat just like most our games with Enid," Bay said.   "Really proud of our guys for hanging in there and continuing to fight when we fell behind late.  Right now we're happy about the sweep but we realize the series is far from over.  We can't wait for Sunday night in Enid."

The two teams play again Sunday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.

Also, the Mavs softball team travels to Enid for a doubleheader against the NOC Enid Jets Sunday starting at noon.
