Jets fall in classic Region 2 final to NOC Tonkawa 66-64

The NOC Enid Jets came within an eyelash of winning the Region 2 Conference Tournament Saturday but Andrew O'Brien's 3-pointer was just off the mark at the buzzer and NOC Tonkawa won 66-64 at the Stride Bank Center.

The Jets finished their season at 17-5 while the 7th ranked Mavs improved to 23-1.

NOC Enid saw their seven game winning streak snapped.

Jalen Stamps led the Jets with 18 while Teyan Scanlan had 12, and Noah Jordan 11.

"We battled and played tough, and we competed against a great team in Tonkawa," said Jets' coach Chris Gerber.  "Foul trouble definitely hurt us but we were still able to hang around and had chances at the end of the game.  I'm just super proud and blessed to have this team, they have handled the craziness of this year and still stayed together and we did great things this year. Nothing to hang our heads over. It's tough to be so close and fall short but in the bigger picture, we had a successful season."

The game had four ties and eight lead changes in the second half.  The Mavs then built a 65-59 lead with 1:40 left on the strength of a 9-3 run.

The Jets rallied to 65-62 on a Teyan Scanlan 3-pointer and then cut the lead to 65-64 on a Jalen Stamps dish to Quentin Harvey for a layup.

After the Mavs made one free throw, the Jets had one last chance with :09.1 left but couldn't convert and the Mavs were 66-64 winners.

Jalen Stamps and Ikenna Okeke were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Saturday's game was also the first time that any two NOC programs have competed in the championship game of the Region 2 Tournament in the same year.
