Lady Tigers suffer first home defeat in split with NOC-Tonkawa

It was a tale of two games on Monday at the Ed Hargrove Softball Field as the Cowley College Lady Tiger softball team defeated Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa 9-2 in game one before losing the nightcap by a score of 11-3.

Cowley was 9-0 at home prior to the loss of game two. The Lady Tigers are now 15-8 overall, while NOC-Tonkawa is 5-9.

Cowley benefitted from six walks and a pair of errors to build a 9-0 lead in game one. Lady Tiger freshman Mikah Vann (7-3) allowed only a two-run homer to Maggie Glasgow in the top of the fifth inning as the right-hander allowed four hits and two runs in seven innings. Vann struck out six and walked two.

Sophomore Karleigh Bell had two of Cowley's seven hits as she went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. Jamie Molina also played well, drawing a pair of walks and hitting a sacrifice fly as she drove in two runs and scored two.

The opener featured the Mavericks dropping a fly ball in the outfield, falling down when attempting to throw the ball in from the outfield, and failing to generate an out when having the base-runner caught in a run down.

However, NOC-Tonkawa looked like an entirely different team in the nightcap, and it was Cowley making the miscues. The Mavericks scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to the 11-3 win.

Lady Tiger starting pitcher Jaiden Swanson (7-4) failed to make it out of the first inning. Swanson allowed seven runs while recording only two outs. Alissa Nuno followed with 4 2/3 innings of relief.

Cowley's Lyric Perry went 2-for-2 with a home run in the defeat. However, the Lady Tigers managed only three more hits throughout their lineup.

The Mavericks finished with 12 hits and took advantage of four Tiger errors.

Cowley will remain home to play a doubleheader against Haskell College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. before playing a doubleheader at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on Thursday.
